Do you ever find that the shoulders on your garments are a bit too wide for your liking? It's not uncommon for ready-made clothing to have this issue, and while it might not seem like a big deal, a loose fit around the shoulders can make an outfit look less polished. Fortunately, adjusting the shoulders to better suit your body type is a straightforward process that can significantly enhance how well a pattern fits.
To begin, prepare your front bodice piece by marking the center of the shoulder seam. On most patterns, the seam allowance is typically 1/4 inch, so make sure your mark reflects this detail. Next, locate a spot approximately one-third of the way down the armhole and draw a line connecting your initial shoulder mark to this new point. From there, extend another line from the corner of the shoulder seam to intersect with the first line.
Once these lines are drawn, carefully cut along the first line, starting from the shoulder seam and stopping just before reaching the armhole. Be sure to leave a small hinge of paper attached to allow flexibility during the next steps. Following this, cut along the second line beginning at your previous cut and extending toward the outer corner of the shoulder seam, once again leaving a hinge.
For the fourth step, determine how much you wish to reduce the shoulder width—let’s say 1/4 inch—and create a new mark at this distance from the center point along the shoulder seam. Shift this mark slightly toward the neckline of the garment. Afterward, connect the dots you’ve created, sliding the adjusted sections inward to align the original center mark with the new one. As you do this, the shoulder corner will naturally spread out, causing some overlapping of the paper pieces. This action effectively narrows the shoulder seam without altering the length of the armhole, eliminating the need to adjust the sleeves.
Secure the pieces in place using tape. Repeat this entire sequence on the back bodice piece to complete the transformation.
