Are you finding that the shoulders on your garments tend to be a bit too wide? It's a common issue where overly broad shoulders can make your clothes look ill-fitted and sloppy. However, making a narrow shoulder adjustment is a simple and effective way to customize your patterns to better match your body shape.
**Step 1:** Begin by preparing your front bodice piece for modification. First, locate the center point of the shoulder seam on the seam line and mark it with a dot. On this particular pattern, my seam allowance is 1/4 inch, so I marked the center point 1/4 inch from the edge, as shown by the upper black dot in the image below. Next, measure about 1/3 of the way down the armscye and add another dot on the seam line. Connect these two dots with a straight line (the red line below). From the corner of the shoulder seam, draw another line connecting it to the previously drawn line (the blue line below).
**Step 2:** Using scissors, carefully cut along the red line, starting from the shoulder seam and continuing towards, but not through, the armscye. Be sure to leave a small paper "hinge" so that you can rotate the pattern later.
**Step 3:** Next, cut along the blue line, beginning at the previous cut and finishing near the outer corner of the shoulder seam. Again, ensure you leave a hinge to allow for movement of the paper.
**Step 4:** Decide how much you wish to narrow the shoulder—my adjustment was 1/4 inch—and create a new dot that distance from the center point on the shoulder seam line. In my case, I positioned this new dot 1/4 inch away from the initial dot, shifting it closer to the neckline.
**Step 5:** Connect the dots. Shift the adjusted sections toward the neckline to narrow the shoulder, ensuring the original center dot aligns with the new dot and the shoulder edge forms a straight line. The corner of the shoulder will naturally open slightly due to overlapping paper, effectively narrowing the shoulder seam without altering the armscye length, thus avoiding the need to adjust the sleeve.
Secure the pieces with tape. Repeat this process on the back bodice, and you're finished!
