Despite significant price increases this season, consumer enthusiasm remains strong. High-end winter wear is now seen as a symbol of status and style. During a visit to local shopping malls, reporters observed that the prices of both new and used furs have risen dramatically, with some items increasing by as much as 40%. At the Parkson store, a sales associate shared that this year’s new furs feature thicker layers of wool or down, along with enhanced fur collars. For instance, a fur coat that once cost less than 10,000 yuan now commands a significantly higher price.
Older models of fur coats have also seen substantial price hikes. One leather garment that previously sold for 5,800 yuan now costs 7,900 yuan after a 2.5% discount. Meanwhile, a new short men’s lambskin jacket is priced 5,000 yuan higher than it was last year. A thick leather coat from a well-known brand is now available at prices ranging from 12,600 to 35,000 yuan. According to a sales representative at a European-style fur shop, demand for fur clothing has been steadily rising, driven by limited raw material supplies. Fur materials have seen an average price increase of 25% compared to last year, while suede prices have climbed by as much as 40%.
In the down jacket market, even budget options are no longer affordable. The reporter visited a local down jacket market and found that the prices of branded products like Bosideng, Islay, and Jieao have risen sharply. Sales staff at Islay noted that the cost of raw materials—whether down filling, synthetic fibers, or cotton fabric—has gone up. This year, the price of high-quality cashmere down has surged from 80,000 to 100,000 yuan per ton last year to over 300,000 yuan per ton this year. Additionally, fabrics, linings, and accessories have all become more expensive. Mr. Zhang, who was shopping for a down jacket for his girlfriend, said that he could hardly find any brand-priced down jackets below 1,000 yuan. Most are now priced above 1,000 yuan, with nearly 40% of new models costing close to 4,000 yuan.
Despite the steep price increases, sales have not declined. In fact, the market has seen a notable rise in demand. At Alaiyi’s store, a sales associate mentioned that consumers’ spending habits have evolved. “Previously, people would buy a down jacket or fur coat only when necessary. Now, they’re choosing high-end fashion every year,†she explained. Due to the recent cold snap in Lanzhou, sales in the past two days exceeded the total of the previous week.
