Recently, while visiting Luwan Village in Zhuangwu Town, the author spoke with Jiao Guangqin, a skilled Liubian artisan. She shared that she regularly delivers her finished Liubian products to Hanlin Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. on a monthly basis. After passing both technical and quality inspections, she receives her monthly processing fee, which amounts to at least 30,000 yuan. In Cangshan County, Shandong Province, more than 3,000 households like Jiao’s rely on Liubian craftsmanship to build a better life. The average annual income per household is around 25,000 yuan, offering a stable source of livelihood for many families.
Cangshan County has leveraged its rich local resources to boost the Liubian industry. By combining traditional weaving techniques with modern design, the county has developed innovative products such as murals, bionic designs, and antique-style wicker items, significantly improving the quality and craftsmanship of traditional wicker goods. In the first half of this year alone, nearly 100 new design themes were introduced, including those inspired by events like the World Expo and Asian Games. Over two million pieces of willow products were produced, showcasing the growing demand for these unique crafts.
To further enhance the industry, representatives from processing households, technical experts, and farmer brokers have traveled to advanced regions like Liuzhou to learn and gain hands-on experience. They are also collaborating with Liubian companies in neighboring counties such as Lucheng and Heze Cao County, forming partnerships for sales and expanding market reach through strategic alliances. This "borrowing boats to sail" approach has opened up new opportunities for wealth creation in the region.
Additionally, the county actively promotes its Liubian products by organizing key enterprises to participate in major fairs such as the Canton Fair, helping them explore new markets. With support from government departments and local cooperatives, a "company + farmer" and "company + farmer + base" model has been established, strengthening the supply chain and boosting efficiency.
Currently, there are 15 companies involved in the production of Liubian handicrafts, employing over 1,000 people. Their products are sold across more than 20 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions, as well as over 30 countries and regions, including Europe, North America, and East Asia. Annual export orders have reached 30 million U.S. dollars, highlighting the global appeal of Cangshan's Liubian craft.
