Yiwu, known as the "Chinese Zipper Industry Base," has taken a significant step forward by introducing its first local industry standard for the national zipper sector—the Yiwu Zipper Industry Alliance Standard. This new guideline is set to be implemented across hundreds of zipper companies in the region, marking a major milestone in improving the overall quality and competitiveness of Yiwu's zipper industry. Since 2003, China has emerged as a global leader in zipper manufacturing, with over 90% of the world’s “Made in China” zippers produced domestically. Within this booming industry, Yiwu holds a crucial position. The city is home to more than 300 zipper manufacturers, producing over 10 billion meters of zippers annually. Additionally, Yiwu remains the largest trading hub for zipper products globally, with 80% of national zipper manufacturers setting up sales outlets there. As a result, Yiwu consistently leads the country in both production and sales of zippers. Wu Xinxi, Secretary General of the Yiwu Zipper Industry Association, emphasized that the lack of clear guidelines had previously hindered the improvement of product quality. The newly developed Yiwu Zipper League Standard addresses ambiguities, such as zipper size specifications, and establishes a comprehensive database to support consistent quality control. According to Wu, the standard has been reviewed and approved by many domestic experts, who confirmed that it surpasses existing national standards and aligns with international benchmarks. Some aspects even exceed global standards. The Yiwu Zipper League Standard integrates advanced metrics from renowned international standards like Germany’s DIN and the UK’s BS, while placing a strong emphasis on environmental protection, sustainability, and safety. These features are expected to make the standard more appealing in European markets, where eco-friendly and safe products are highly valued.
