Lead: Underwear, once considered a private garment worn beneath outer layers, has made a bold shift in recent years. In the spring and summer of 2010, designers began experimenting with tight silhouettes, skin-like effects, and transparent fabrics, turning undergarments into eye-catching outerwear that dominated major fashion runways.

Experts from the Paris Fashion Institute at Shanghai University have identified key elements that define this new trend, making it more than just a passing fad.

Hot Pants – Not Just for the Gym Anymore

Once seen as gym wear, hot pants have now taken over the streets. In 2009, Kate Moss was among the first to break the mold by pairing them with long fur coats, creating a striking contrast. As the fashion cycle continues, hot pants are no longer hidden away—instead, they’re evolving into must-have summer pieces. With their short cuts and bold styles, they’re ready to steal the spotlight.

Dress Tips for Hot Pants:

  1. The length should be just above the thigh. The back should fit snugly without extra fabric.
  2. High heels are ideal for elongating the legs, unless you're a supermodel like Gisele Bündchen or Natasha Poly.
  3. This season’s hot pants come in bright colors and bold patterns. Pair them with feathers, knits, or other accessories for a fresh look.
  4. To balance the exposed skin, choose longer tops like men's shirts or loose blouses.
  5. Bold patterns and unique belts can add flair. Don’t think pantyhose are out—this season is all about bringing back the versatility of pants.
  6. Hot pants aren't just for casual days. With thoughtful details like rivets or metal accents, they can work for dinner dates too.
  7. If your hips aren’t perfectly shaped or you’re not confident, it might be best to skip them for now.

Bodysuit – The New Star on the Runway

Bodysuits, originally popular in the 80s and 90s, were once seen as basic layering pieces. But this season, they’ve taken center stage. From pleated details to glittering textures, modern bodysuits are being reimagined. Paired with oversized jackets or motorcycle vests, they create a stylish, layered look. Even classic items like ballet skirts and bra-style tees are making a comeback in this trend.

Nude Tones – Blurring the Lines Between Inner and Outer Wear

With so many printed patterns dominating the season, many designers are turning to soft, natural tones to bring elegance and freshness. Shades of champagne, beige, and ash create a subtle yet sophisticated palette. Brands like Givenchy and Chloe have embraced this approach, using skin-toned outfits and shoes to blur the line between undergarments and outerwear. Lisa from the Shanghai University-Paris Institute suggests pairing these soft tones with structured coats or flat shoes for a balanced look.

Sheer Fabrics – Adding a Touch of Sexiness

Sheer fabrics, known for their transparency and delicate texture, are making a strong comeback. Designers are using them to add a sense of romance and allure to otherwise simple outfits. From Donna Karan’s elegant sheer ensembles to Ralph Lauren’s feminine chiffon blouses, sheer materials are helping redefine modern fashion. Vera Wang’s collection even features layered sheer fabrics that pair beautifully with bold accessories.
