In India, 10.6 million hectares of cotton fields have been planted this season, breaking the global record for cotton cultivation area and surpassing the previous U.S. record of 10.4 million hectares set in 1934. This significant increase highlights the country's growing role in global cotton production.
Anupam Barik, the Minister of Cotton Development in India, confirmed the data, stating that so far, 10.6 million hectares have been sown. With additional planting expected in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka—around 25 to 30 thousand hectares—the total early spring planting area could reach 11 million hectares by the end of the season.
In the 2009-10 season, the cotton area was recorded at 10.171 million hectares, with a notable rise of about 50,000 hectares in Maharashtra. The state has consistently been a key player in India’s cotton output.
India started cultivating Bt cotton, a genetically modified variety, in 2002. At that time, the area under Bt cotton was approximately 7.667 million hectares, and it has since expanded by over 3 million hectares. This growth has contributed to increased yields and improved pest resistance, making Bt cotton a cornerstone of India’s agricultural strategy.
With continued investment and favorable weather conditions, India is on track to solidify its position as the world’s leading cotton producer. Farmers and officials alike are optimistic about the upcoming harvest and its impact on both domestic and international markets.
