In a recent report released by the Brazilian textile industry on October 28, it was revealed that imports for the first nine months of this year reached $3.615 billion, marking a significant increase compared to $2.482 billion during the same period in 2009—a growth of 47.22%. Meanwhile, exports rose to $1.548 billion, up 19.59% from $1.242 billion in 2008. These figures indicate that Brazil’s textile sector is showing strong signs of recovery after being affected by the global financial crisis.
Throughout the first nine months of 2023, major textile categories such as synthetic fibers, garments, and fabrics all saw substantial growth. Fabric imports totaled $984.7 million, a 71.79% increase over the same period in 2009. Synthetic fiber imports also rose sharply, reaching $57.2 million, an increase of 50.41% compared to the previous year.
China remained Brazil's largest textile supplier, with total imports amounting to $1.515 billion. India and Indonesia followed closely with $411.75 million and $225 million respectively. Taiwan ranked third with $130.57 million. On the state level, Santa Catarina led in textile imports with $1.093 billion, followed by São Paulo at $850 million, and EspÃrito Santo at $472.69 million.
In terms of exports, Argentina was the top buyer of Brazilian textiles, purchasing $295.9 million worth of goods. The United States and Indonesia came in second and third, with $199.04 million and $114.7 million respectively. São Paulo was the leading export state, with $36.07 million in textile exports, followed by Bahia at $255.36 million and Mato Grosso at $219.11 million.
Additionally, Brazil imported $532.02 million in textile machinery during the first nine months of the year, a 29.02% increase from $403.6 million in 2009. Sewing machines (HS Code 8452) were the most imported category, reaching $150.12 million. Knitting and sewing machines (HS Code 8447) came in second with $80.85 million, while textile auxiliary machines (HS Code 8448) accounted for $69.02 million.
These developments highlight the growing importance of the textile industry in Brazil and its increasing role in both domestic and international trade.
