On February 21, the business club reported that American clothing retailers are experiencing a significant relief from previous pressures. After a decline in consumer spending on fashion and apparel by approximately 5% in 2009, the trend reversed in 2010, with overall spending rising by 1.9% compared to the previous year. This marks a positive shift for the industry after two consecutive years of contraction. The men's clothing market saw a strong recovery, posting a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. This follows a sharp drop of 5.6% in 2009, showing a clear rebound in demand. Women's wear also improved, with sales growing by 2.9% in 2010, compared to a 5.0% decrease in 2009. These figures suggest that consumers are gradually returning to pre-recession levels of spending on fashion. However, the children’s wear segment disappointed, as retail sales fell by 3.6% year-on-year. Despite this decline, the number of retail transactions actually increased by 1%, which may indicate that more people are shopping for children’s clothing, but at lower average prices or in smaller quantities. Among specific categories, women's clothing such as skirts saw the most growth, with sales increasing by nearly 13%. Apparel overall grew by almost 4%, highlighting a continued interest in fashion items. These trends reflect shifting consumer preferences and the gradual recovery of the U.S. retail sector in the post-economic downturn period.
