In recent years, the works of Wen Fang have frequently made headlines at auction houses with impressive prices. For instance, a Qing Dynasty Qianlong-era "Jade Rabbit for the Lantern Festival" was sold for 1.033 million yuan, while a piece titled "Duan Shiyi" from the Song Dynasty fetched 511,500 yuan. However, according to a recent report from Wuhan's Tibetan community, the Duanwu collection has yet to gain significant traction in the local market.
Li Xianfeng, a seasoned collector based in Wuhan, shared that ten years ago, ancient artifacts from Fujian and Taiwan were typically valued around 100,000 yuan on the auction circuit. In just the past two years, however, prices have surged dramatically, reaching as high as 500,000 or even 1 million yuan. The latest record-breaking sale hit an astonishing 14 million yuan. Despite strong performances by Fujian and Taiwan collections in other regions and nationwide auctions, Wuhan still hasn't seen a true market trend take shape.
Currently, most of the items available in Wuhan’s market are fakes or low-quality imitations. Even when genuine pieces do appear, their quality is often questionable. During a recent visit, reporters found no dedicated antique shops specializing in Fujian and Taiwan collectibles in Wuhan. The market price for such items generally ranges between 2,000 and 5,000 yuan.
According to industry insiders, Fujian and Taiwan collections remain niche and are not yet a mainstream trend. Li Xianfeng noted that most items priced in the thousands are modern crafts or high-quality imitations, which lack real collectible value. These pieces may look good but are not suitable for serious collectors. However, if a contemporary artist's work is collected and features original handwriting or signature, it could hold more value.
The market for these items is still evolving, and buyers are advised to be cautious. As the demand grows, so does the need for expertise and authenticity. For now, Wuhan remains a relatively quiet corner in the broader world of Fujian and Taiwan antiquities.
