Jinzhou City, Liaoning Province: The passing rate of down jacket thermal underwear is less than 50%

In early winter, down jackets and thermal underwear became highly sought-after items. To ensure quality and regulate the cold-weather clothing market, the Jinzhou City Administration for Industry and Commerce conducted a sampling inspection of down garments and thermal wear within its jurisdiction. A total of 60 samples were collected: 20 samples of down jackets and 40 samples of thermal underwear. The results revealed concerning pass rates—only 45% of the down jackets passed the tests, while just 25% of the thermal wear met the required standards. Most of the sampled products came from Jinzhou Shopping Mall. The inspections focused on key parameters such as pH value, cleanliness, filling amount, and product labeling, in accordance with national mandatory standards. Out of the 20 down jacket samples tested, 9 were qualified, with 11 failing. The main issues were related to insufficient filling and incorrect product labeling. Notably, 90.9% of the failures were due to inadequate filling, which directly affects both the warmth and price of the garment. The higher the fill weight, the better the insulation and the more expensive the jacket tends to be. For thermal underwear, the tests examined fiber content, pH level, color fastness to water, rubbing, and perspiration, along with proper product labeling. Of the 40 samples tested, only 10 were合格, resulting in a 25% pass rate. The primary problems were poor fiber content (accounting for 62.5% of failures) and inadequate color fastness to rubbing (25%). Fiber content plays a crucial role in maintaining body heat by reducing heat exchange with the environment. Lower fiber content means reduced thermal performance. In response to these findings, the industry and commerce authorities have instructed retailers who failed to meet labeling requirements to make necessary corrections within a set timeframe. For products that do not conform to national standards or pose usability issues, the operators were ordered to immediately remove the non-compliant items from the market. Additionally, the administration advised consumers to pay attention to six key factors when purchasing down jackets. First, check for clear trademarks, factory names, and certifications, including details like cashmere content. Second, shake the jacket—if no down falls out, it’s likely a high-quality product. Third, touch the fabric; if it feels soft and you can’t feel the hair stems, it suggests better quality. Fourth, pinch the jacket; higher-quality down jackets tend to compress less. Fifth, try it on—it should provide quick warmth, usually within two minutes. Lastly, listen for any strange odors; a good down jacket should have a neutral smell. If it smells strongly, it may indicate poor processing or lack of sterilization. Consumers are also encouraged to purchase from well-known brands and keep receipts to protect their rights in case of disputes. Choosing reputable manufacturers ensures better quality and long-term satisfaction during the cold season.
