One of the old monkey stamps has now reached a value of one million yuan. The stamp market is on a steep upward trend. Once worth just 8 cents, the Gengshen Monkey Stamps have soared in price, with a complete set now approaching nearly 1 million yuan—equivalent to a valuable collection. According to recent reports from the Chongren Road Collectibles Market, these stamps, often referred to as the "Postal Market Index," have experienced a dramatic increase in value. This surge has pushed the entire postal market into an upward trajectory.
On the same day, the stamp counter at the Chongren Road Collectibles Market was packed with collectors eager to purchase new releases. Even the newly issued Xinyin Rabbit Stamps saw a noticeable price jump. For instance, a stamp with a face value of 1.2 yuan now sells for around 1.5 yuan in the market—an increase of over 20%. Similarly, a four-sheet set originally priced at 6 yuan now fetches about 8 yuan. It's not just the rabbit stamps that are gaining; many other stamps have also seen significant price increases.
According to Yi Youzhang, deputy general manager of Wuhan’s philatelic market, the stamp market has been booming since last year, with a surplus of capital flooding into the sector. Some collectors even buy entire boxes of stamps, especially newcomers who are more aggressive than seasoned investors. This is largely due to continued investor confidence in collectibles and the influx of funds. Additionally, stricter real estate policies have driven hot money away from the property market. In early January, the government introduced new regulations targeting the real estate sector, followed by measures such as purchase restrictions and property taxes. These policies have made it riskier for speculative capital to invest in real estate. After the government's crackdown on commodities like garlic, beans, and ginger, many investors have turned their attention to the collectibles market instead.
Despite the rising popularity, Yi Youzhang advises caution for new investors entering the stamp market. He suggests focusing on more affordable options like historical commemorative sheets, Hong Kong and Macao stamps, and official seals. These items offer better entry points for those looking to build a collection without breaking the bank.
